Heaven & Earth Aikido

Class Schedule and Program

Adult Aikido

Our adult program offers an exciting and challenging curriculum suited for practitioners of all experience levels. Our teaching philosophy allows for all of our students to train together regardless of rank or experience. A beginner at our dojo will train in the same classes as everyone else, but from the first day they will receive one-to-one personal instruction from one of our senior students. New students will continue in this manner until they are ready to stand on their own. Ericksen Sensei believes strongly in the philosophy of raising new students together with the rest of the community rather than isolating them in “beginner” classes. Our experienced and professional teaching staff is trained to make sure that students of all levels receive the proper guidance and supervision. Our adult class schedule is flexible and offers training options from Monday through Saturday. Most of our classes are in the evening but we do have some morning and afternoon options available, and more will be added soon. Anyone who is interested in learning more about the adult program at Heaven and Earth Aikido may call, email, or stop by the dojo during class hours for more information.

Kids Aikido

Our children’s program is focused on working with children between the ages of 6 and 13 to improve listening skills, discipline, alertness, self-confidence, and of course, learn Aikido! We have a great bunch of kids and the parents are very engaged as well. It is a wonderful environment to learn and share and become a member of an Aikido family.

Students in the program will learn not only basic aikido techniques, but also a variety of skills and principles through physical exercise and mental discipline. The curriculum imparts the necessary etiquette and respect for tradition while helping them to foster sensitivity and patience towards their fellow students. On the mat, the physical aspect of training provides kids with a positive outlet for their energy, while our experienced instructors make sure that the energy is expended in a focused and good-natured way!

Our children’s program uses colored belts to visually denote the progress of a child, helping to keep them excited and engaged. Aikido as a martial art embodies the very nature of cooperation and harmony, therefore, our children will never spar or compete with one another for trophies or other such awards; Aikido is the pursuit of self-victory, and we nurture our students to understand this ideal.

Parents are always welcome to bring their children to observe a class or to participate. The Children’s program currently meets twice a week, please see the schedule for details.

We believe that training the mind to be present in the moment is a critical component not only of martial training. Meditation is led by Blue Mountain White Clouds Hermitage. The practice is led in the Soto Zen style focusing on Shikantaza (sitting) and practices of the Buddha to promote awareness and self understanding.
